A special warmth filled the Okura Hotel’s Mayfair room on January 28, 2005 during FEPC’s “Kokusai Shinenkai of Hope.” Warmth circulated, touched, and bound the 100 plus guests from 15 diverse countries as all joined together in a common cause of charity, to assist the Fukuoka United Nations-Habitat office in their efforts to provide relief to the victims of the December 26 earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean.
Though describing the worst natural disaster of our time, acting Director of Fukuoka’s UN-habitat office, Mr. Madhab Mathema did not dwell on the 'circumstances'. Instead he spoke of the unprecedented human effort put forth by the international community to provide hope and assistance to the region. The event retained a celebratory hue as guests found comfort in their communal expression of charity, providing relief to those in need. Indeed the group celebrated the response of the Australian and Canadian governments as the principal officers of both local consulates (Mr. Jarrod Warring and Ms. Andrea Clements) described their countries’ generosity in acting globally as well as locally. The event celebrated still the success of the JCI World Congress held in Fukuoka in November 2004. The conference attracted more then 10,000 delegates to Fukuoka and infused an estimated 500 million Yen into the local economy while helping to advance the cause of internationalization in the City. The crowds found cause for celebration in hearing Mr. Humayun Mughal describe his efforts to bring normalcy to the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan. He spoke of his vision of a more a global community before raising his glass and unifying the crowd with an earnest “kampai” that cued the nimble fingers of Ms. Mio Unehara to dance across the piano and fill the room with a background of classical jazz that sparked a buzz of conversation, communication, and business exchange.
The Foreign Entrepreneur Promotions Committee’s decision to convert the annual Kokusai Shinenkai into a fundraiser and donate all the proceeds to the Fukuoka UN-habitat office awoke charitable sentiments across Fukuoka’s international business community. The event inspired individuals and corporate sponsors to volunteer and donate their time, talent, and funds. It is not too much to mention them in this review:
